Basically, compost is a mixture of the following six ingredients:
Nitrogen, carbon, oxygen, bacteria, high temperatures, and water.
“Greens” such as vegetable matter and coffee grounds help add nitrogen and moisture to the pile. “Browns” such as dried leaves add carbon. Turning the compost will add oxygen. These conditions create a beneficial living environment for aerobic (oxygen-needing) bacteria to break down organic matter into compost.
